On: Wednesday, 18 Sep 2019
Venue: at Home

The start of season 2019/20 for HABS football was greeted with early Autumn sunshine as the 1st XI started the campaign with a Wednesday fixture against Immanuel College. Of the selected squad, six Year 11s making their debuts gave the squad a boost, and a good sign of what is yet to come. A purposeful warm up set the tone for the 80 minutes of football ahead, and despite high intensity football, and HABS dominating possession, a tightly fought first half ended goalless, with chances few and far between.

The 1st XI came out in the second half pumped up by Mr Hails’ team talk, and it only took a couple of minutes for their efforts to be shown on the scoreline. 20 yards out, Henry Mattey picked his spot in the corner from a free kick, and HABS went 1-0 up. It was almost like watching a replay a few minutes later as the midfielder caressed the ball into the top corner from the edge of the box. Captain Ben Bellman was solid at the back all game and he got a deserved goal when a handball gave him the chance from 12 yards out, and he put the ball out of the reach of a diving Immanuel keeper. One of the debutants, Viren Dulabh then nipped in in front of his opposing centre half, bursting forward from halfway before driving the ball into the corner of the net. The icing on the cake was a lovely team move, which ended with the ball finding its way into the goal via a stretching Joe Santhouse.

The final whistle soon followed, building a good platform for the season ahead with a solid 5 goal win and a clean sheet. At the end of the day it was a deserved victory and credit must go to both sides for the manner in which they played the game.
