Venue: at Home

After an excellent start to the season the Habs 1st XI came up against strong opponents in City of London School in the 2nd Round of the Boodles ISFA Cup. Initially Habs struggled to cope with the step up in class from their previous matches and found themselves 2-0 down within ten minutes of the kick off. It looked as if the lads were in for a very uncomfortable afternoon but the reaction to the early setback was positive and the team began to get a foothold in the match with captain Ben Bellman inspiring the team at the back and Henry Mattey tenacious in midfield. After good attacking play, a well-worked corner between Nathan Oba-Okusanya and Dan Rossiter found skipper Bellman at the near post and his diving header sailed into the net to put the home side back in the game. Habs then proved a real match for their physically stronger opponents for the rest of the first half and went in to the break 2-1 down.

Habs started the second half with real purpose and intensity, playing some lovely passing football through midfield and very nearly created an equaliser when Oba-Okusanya's brilliant left foot cross found a stretching Ed Cleaver who just missed the target from inside the box. As the half went on, however, City of London began to take a firmer grip on the game and two quick goals midway through the second half put them firmly in control. Despite the deficit, Habs continued playing some excellent football and the impressive away goalkeeper was forced to make an excellent save from Henry Mattey. Habs conceded a late goal to make the away win look a little more convincing than the reality but our young 1st XI will have benefited greatly from playing against older and more experienced opposition.
