HABS 1st XI continued their fine run of T20 form against Bancroft’s School. On a warm and sunny afternoon, skipper Kellen Dubignon was asked to field first. Bancroft’s openers started quietly, so quietly in fact that the umpires called Tea after 10 overs. After being mistaken by an umpire for ex-HABS icon Taif Choudhury, left-arm spinner Anant Pathak produced a brilliant delivery to remove the set opener. Bancroft’s increased their run rate in the second half of their innings, taking the attack to our bowlers. Neel Madan and Dubignon got the breakthroughs, though after several catches were put down off their bowling, they leaked what appeared a few too many at the death. Bancroft’s set us a target of 152, which they seemed confident of defending. Zaid Kureshi, who earlier bowled a frugal spell to their openers, had other ideas.

Jay Madan and Kureshi went about the chase with confidence, putting the pressure back onto Bancroft’s bowlers. Between them they hit 7 fours and 3 sixes in the powerplay, batting above the required rate from the outset. Kureshi carried his bat for an unbeaten 79, displaying an impressive array of cuts, pulls and drives to take us home with 9 wickets to spare. After fielding in shorts against Abingdon on Saturday, Kureshi stayed true to his demeanour, mistaking opposition coach Carl Greenidge for West Indies opener Andre Fletcher. He duly took a photo with him, capping off an outstanding all-round performance. We now look forward eagerly to the upcoming 2-day game against Merchant Taylors’ School.
